Vidya Balan’s Cannes appearances receives a thumps up from Indian designers

While everyone on home turf seems to be discussing Vidya Balan’s sartorial choices on the red carpet ,as she traveled to the French Riviera as part of the prestigious 9-member jury, the actress and her designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee remain unfazed with criticism ,reiterating that the National Award winner aims to represent the country’s cultural heritage and not mainstream glamour ,as India celebrates 100 years of Hindi cinema.
Voicing his vision behind the clothing says Sabyasachi, “Vidya is very clear that she is an actress and nothing more… She clearly kept saying that I and she both shouldn’t forget that she was going there as a jury member and the look should be very, very respectable,”
Vidya’s outfit’s infact had even caught Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone’s attention as he approached her to compliment her on her unique sense of dressing – On home turf too several designers from the fashion fraternity have voiced their support towards her look and styling.
Says designer Anna Singh, “Vidya is looking fine in Cannes… Rekha has worn sarees for more than four decades to almost every place where she goes. Have you seen Hema Malini donning any other garb since the longest time? Vidya is the authentic face of our country and we want her to wear international gowns!Gosh!”.
Adds Sandeep Khosla who has designed for several international names, “Vidya overall has looked so radiant. And we have forgotten that she has done India proud by getting selected as a jury member. Sad but true. Also, I am very disturbed by people criticising the embroidery on Vidya’s sarees. Embroidery goes from India to all the other parts of the world. Why are we so mesmerised by globalization?”.
One of the hugest honors for a star to receive, Vidya Balan was selected as jury member at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, joining the likes of Oscar-winning actor Nicole Kidman, director Ang Lee, Japanese director Naomi Kawase, British scriptwriter-director-producer Lynne Ramsay, French actor-director Daniel Auteuil, Romanian scriptwriter-director-producer Cristian Mungiu and Austrian actor Christopher Waltz as part of the nine-member jury.
