'Ra.One' - The economics

Let me re-phrase the dialogue from READY. Zindagi mein 3 names ko kabhi under-estimate mat karna: Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. It started with GHAJINI, which was the first Hindi film to touch the Rs 100 cr nett mark in India. Aamir followed it up with mega-blockbuster 3 IDIOTS, while Salman had a hat trick of blockbusters in DABANGG, READY and BODYGUARD. Now SRK's RA.ONE has only made us realize that the business of Hindi films is growing rapidly and what was a distant dream or perhaps, unimaginable -- touching the Rs 100 cr mark -- is very much in sight in the 5-day opening weekend itself. Sure, BODYGUARD and RA.ONE have not been able to attain the figure [Rs 100 cr] in 5 days, but don't be surprised if the forthcoming biggies manage the feat in the near future. If there's any other actor who comes close to the three Khans, it is Ajay Devgn, who has two films in the 100 cr Club -- GOLMAAL 3 and SINGHAM.
The word of mouth for RA.ONE is extremely mixed. In fact, it's extreme -- people are either loving it or hating it. But what's new? Prior to RA.ONE, the reports of SINGHAM and also BODYGUARD were extremely mixed. Worse, the critics were harsh on these two films as well, but that didn't stop the audience from giving their mandate, embracing the films whole-heartedly. The business of these two films bears testimony to this fact. But what goes against RA.ONE is the negativity, which may hamper its business in the second weekend.
Now let's look at the economics of the film:-
The cost, including P & A, is Rs 135 cr.

Now let's look at the recoveries:-
* Satellite rights [Hindi, Tamil, Telugu] + Audio rights + Home Video - Rs 50 cr.
* U.K. Government subsidy - Rs 15 cr to Rs 25 cr

Which means, the recoveries from the above-mentioned rights is Rs 75 cr. The balance amount -- Rs 60 cr -- has to be recovered from India and Overseas theatrical.
In view of the fact that RA.ONE has collected Rs 92 cr in its opening weekend [all languages] in India alone, the distributors' share works out to approx Rs 50 cr. Mind you, I am not looking at the revenue RA.ONE has generated from Overseas. I am looking at the business from India right now. Which means, a big chunk of the investment should be recovered from India itself. And if one were to add the revenue generated from Overseas, RA.ONE is already in profits.
Those asking whether RA.ONE would be able to touch/surpass the business of 3 IDIOTS in India [Rs 202 cr nett], let me make it very clear. It won't! Let's face it, the word of mouth for 3 IDIOTS was unanimously superb, while the response to RA.ONE tilts more towards the negative side. But it would be interesting to see where RA.ONE eventually lands up at the end of the day.
As for Eros/Red Chillies, well, RA.ONE would ensure profits for sure, but when you attempt a film of this magnitude, you expect the profits to be in Rs 30 cr to Rs 40 cr range [or more, in the case of 3 IDIOTS and BODYGUARD specifically]. That might not be the case here!

Salman Khan angry with Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha might still be basking under the financial success of Dabangg courtesy Salman Khan, but that doesn’t indicate the actress can’t take her own judgements. News has it that Salman Khan is great annoyed with Sonakshi Sinha for freely said that she isn’t a part of Salman Khan camp and would love to work along with Shahrukh Khan.
At a latest function, Sonakshi Sinha was asked by the press if she’d do a movie along with Shahrukh Khan thinking about that she was part of the Salman Khan camp. Sonakshi responded that acting along with Shahrukh would be a desire come true.Sonakshi also says that she wasn’t part of any camp and that she didn’t rely on the camp tradition. Sonakshi had added that she would like to work with great actors in Bollywood.
However, the damsel was fast to add that she would remain indepted to Salman Khan, for giving her a significant break in Bollywood. While every person understands about the competition between Salman and Shahrukh, Sonakshi has ditched Salman’s camp preferring SRK.

Shahrukh Khan planning ‘RA.One’ sequel

Could not get enough of SRK’s sci-fi mega film ‘RA.One’? Then this reports is for you! The follow up to ‘RA.One’ is absolutely on the cards, and this occasion around the film will likely be named ‘G.One’. Shah Rukh’s near pal Mushtaque Sheikh, who was also part of the ‘RA.One’ writing staff, has verified that the follow up is on. He says that right now everybody was soaking in the achievement of the film, and that they would shortly start work on part 2.

JOINT STATEMENT FROM SEVEN HILLS HOSPITAL & AISHWARYA RAI’s PUBLICIST

This is in regard to the article published by Mumbai Mirror dated 2nd November 2011 titled “ Bachchan’s pick Marol hospital for New B”. Let me remind you that this is the same publication who actually had the gaul of printing an article earlier titled ‘Pregnant Pause’ which stated that Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was incapable of conceiving due to some ailment and now they have turned around and yet again insinuated that there is a possibility that she has pre-decided the date of her delivery!!
POINT 1 FROM THE ARTICLE: Says source, “There is a possibility of Aishwarya going in for a C Section delivery 11.11.11.”
SPOKESPERSON QUOTE, “Yet again ridiculously insinuating such an esteemed and respected family would actually turn nature’s course for such blind sensationalized beliefs. There is a limit to time and again attributing such regressive remarks like marrying her off to a tree or actually planning delivering her baby just for the sake of a sensational journalism. How can journalism allow for such irresponsible reporting with regards to such intimate and personal decisions in a ladies life. Excitement and curiosity aside how can we allow for this to go on and on- this is disgusting….as a woman as I am sitting on the 3rd of November and if by the will of God and nature’s turn, she does end up delivering on the date mentioned, will this fictitious bit of article remain with her for the rest of her life and as an international public icon, is this what she will be tagged with for the rest of the life. This is not what she needs to go through at this happy moment in her life”.
POINT 2 FROM THE ARTICLE - “ Every time Aishwarya makes a trip to the hospital extra precaution is taken to safeguard her privacy says a source. The sonography section is barricaded and curtains drawn to keep away other curious patients revealed our source.
SPOKEPERSON’s QUOTE:This is the most ridiculous remark from a fictitious source– when have women been on a stage when sonographies are done in any hospital and on any woman”.
POINT NO 3 FROM THE ARTICLE: Well placed sources at the hospital revealed that the gynecologist especially comes for Aishwarya’s appointment at 7.30 am usually before other patients start trickling in.
SPOKESPERSON’s QUOTE- “This is totally false and baseless”.
POINT NO 4 FROM THE ARTICLE- However we cannot ever predict a baby’s arrival, so we have booked the room from the 10th to the 15th, added the source.
SPOKESPERSON’s QUOTE, “ Who is this source to have booked a room on the first place ????”
Commenting on this article, Dr. Pai, Head of Radiology and Vice President, Seven Hills Hospital says, “ The report published in a daily tabloid in regards to Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s delivery at Seven Hills has taken me by surprise. The information and details are a figment of someone’s imagination. 7.30 am appointments and a C SECTION for the 11th as declared in the news piece have no resemblance to the truth and such stories only put the medical fraternity in bad light. It may be added that a sonography is a personal procedure and is not performed in open wards hence it would not be different for any patient; each is entitled to their privacy. Twisted details mislead the people of this country to believe and follow what a writer may see has good masala newsprint”.
Adds Aishwarya’s publicist, “ It is unfortunate that such false and fabricated news is being created to influence minds. Such articles as the lead in a daily go against the basic responsibility of print reporting and show case misinformation that could effect the huge following into believing that such wonderful moments of ones lives as a gift of life are open to personal preferences. As a lady I would feel that we should provide a more responsible attitude to such misinformed articles”.
