What are the smaller Social Networks trying to prove?

Facebook is still the leading social media community, but according to a recent study, 2011 saw Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest have more successful years. Behind Facebook are two growing social networks you might not be aware of, Tumblr and Pinterest. They have fewer users than Twitter and even MySpace, but they command quite a bit of time.
Pinterest, a Palo Alto-based startup, is quietly becoming one of the most-trafficked social networking sites on the web. A virtual pin board that tracks users' interests is a social platform worth watching. The site is most popular with females and arts and crafts enthusiasts between the ages of 25 and 44, and its user base is anything but typical — at least for a social network.
comScore‘s 2011 social networking report puts Pinterest's U.S. unique visitors at 4.9 million for November 2011. The site first got on comScore's radar in May 2011 with 418,000 unique U.S. visitors. What Pinterest lacks in visitors it makes up for in stickiness: visitors spent an average of 88.3 minutes at the site in November, third only to Facebook (394 minutes) and Tumblr (141.7 minutes).
It may be the sleeper hit of the year, but investors are certainly awake to its potential. The startup has raised more than $37 million in funding from a who’s who list of venture capitalists, including Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Ron Conway, Max Levchin and Michael Birch.
The undisputed laggard in time spent per visitor is Google+ with a mere 5.1 minutes per U.S. unique visitor. That's less than half the time spent at MySpace (12.0 minutes), a third of time spent at LinkedIn (16.0 minutes) and almost one-fifth of the time spent at Twitter (24.4 minutes).
The blogging platform gained nearly three million new unique visitors, growing 18% from 15.9 million to 18.8 million uniques. Meanwhile, the online pin-it site boomed by nearly 55%, from 4.85 million to 7.51 million uniques.
MySpace may not be losing users directly to these pseudo-rivals, but it’s definitely continuing to hurt. Worldwide, it has fallen from 81.5 million to 61.0 million from November to November. And in the US, the drop is even more pronounced, dropping from 54.4 million to 25.0 million.
Based on all these numbers, 2011 was a banner year for the next era of public self-expression and sharing. The ugly, hacked-up MySpace user profiles of past years are less popular than ever, and users are busy sharing through their beautiful Tumblr themes, through Twitter’s simple 140-character messaging service, and through their online Pinterest pinboards.
Sharing of ideas and personal expression through micro-blogging or communities like Tumblr is growing exponentially. So much so, that we saw Facebook roll out its “Subscription” feature in an attempt to counter the loss of sharing activity to other social communities. It will be interesting to see whether Facebook’s “Subscriptions” will gain traction in 2012 or communities like Pinterest will continue to grow.
Both Tumblr and Pinterest are gaining users, and users are spending more time on these sites. While they haven’t reached the levels of Facebook and Twitter, they are growing, gaining buzz among users and catching marketers’ eyes—and will be worth following in 2012.
