Bhupinder Singh is an awesomely talented multifacetedpersonality. He was born on 6th February. Trained by his father Prof. NathaSingh, the noted vocalist of his time, Bhupinder started his musical career asa young artist at All India Radio (AIR), Delhi. Spotted for his singing talentby the legendary Madan Mohan Bhupinder was brought to Mumbai by the masterhimself. After ‘Hoke majboor mujhe.’ from Haqueeqat there was no looking backfor Bhupinder Singh. Not only he lent his voice to memorable soulful numbersfor R.D. Burman, Jaidev and Khayyam among others, the natural progression ofhis musical talents took him to the next step, i.e. music direction.
Many meaningful geets and ghazals still linger in our senses.Who can forget those enchanting melodies like "Shama Jalaye Rakhna","Darwaza Khula Rakhna", "Aadatan Tumne Kar Diye Vaade" andothers? Bhupinder’s hands created magic when he played guitar in the famous‘Chura liya hai’ and ‘Dum Maro dam’. The musical journey of Bhupinder Singh meta new dimension when he met Mitali Singh nee Mukherjee in a programme in Mumbaiway back in late seventies. Mitali was born on 19th July in Bangladesh. Hailingfrom a musical family, Mitali started her training from the early age of fiveand finished M.Phil from SNDT, College, Mumbai. Little did she know , whom shewas destined to meet and sing history for the years to come.
Their rich and resonant voice can be heard in ‘ Saahil’,‘Sharmate-Sharmate’, Aap ke Naam’ , ‘Arz Kya Hai’ and others to name just afew. The quintessential melodies flow through the voice of the superblytalented couple with equal grace till date. They not only married each otherbut also tied the nuptial knots with music way back. Mitali Singh originally from Bangladesh, known asMitali Mukherjee among the Bengali’s started learning music froma very young age in Bangladesh under the guidance of her guruShri Mithun Dey. After finishing her school she got theIndian Government Scholarship to do her further studies inMusic. She did her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Music from the music faculty of Maharaja Sayaji RaoUniversity , Baroda, Gujarat, in which she was awarded Distinction with aGold Medal. She has done her M.Phil in music from SNDT College, Mumbai.
While studying she recorded a number of songs forBangladesh films and won a National Award in Bangladesh for the song “EkDuniyae Ekhon To Ar” in the movie “Dui Poishar Atta”in 1981. The song wasappreciated by one and all and took the industry by storm.
Simultaneously she used to sing for Ahmedabad RadioStation and TV. She has sung songs in manylanguages like Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati and Tamil. Mitali’s singing ischaracterized by the slower , deeper style of geet and ghazals and her renditions are full of emotions. She hascomposed and sung an entire Bengali album for HMV titled “Kano Asha Bendhe Rakhi.” For which she was recognized as a composerand singer in 1989.
In Eighties Music India used to arrange “ Khazana ’’ which was a2 days Ghazal festival where along with all the Ghazal singers likeJagjit Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Pankaj Udhas , Talat Aziz. She was the prominentsolo female Ghazal singer who enthralled the listeners with her uniquevoice and style. The live album of Khazana also released by Music India that time. Her first solo album in Ghazal which she recorded with HMV was “Saahil” which became a gold disc. For her playback in theTamil film “Dalpati ” by Illaya Raja she was awarded theTriple Platinum Disc.
She has also sung for the Hindi film “ Satyameva Jayate” ,musicby Bhappi Lahiri, which was appreciated by the listeners. Her other albums were : “Tauba Tauba” , “ Aap Ke Nam” ,“ Arz Kiya Hai”,“Shamma Jalaya Rakhna”, “Ek Hassen Sham”, “Mohabbat, released by HMV. “Nasheman” and “ Gulmohur” released by T Series. “Tu Saath Chal” and “ArzKiya Hai” released by Universal.
Recently the album written by Gulzar was released by Times Musiccalled “ Chand Parosa Hai ”, was No. 1 on the Music Chart. Gulzar Saab haswritten a special poem on women “Kitni Girhein Kholi Hai Maine” was sung byMitali was appreciated. Times Music has also released Mitali’s solo album“Jai Jagdish Hare” which has also topped the list.
Mitali and her husband Bhupinder Singh have been activelyinvolved towards the Thalesamia and Cancer patients where every year they givea concert called “Khazana ”for free of charge for the same.
