CHARACTER SKETCHES
DJ Rahul - A disc jockey whose attire and attitude come in the way of his prospective father-in-law's obsession with Hindustaniyat. But a chilled out bloke, he believes that Hindustaniyat is not about wearing a dhoti kurta or not wearing jeans. "Insaan ka dil hindustani hona chaiye" he says and has this to add about his father-in-law, "Love ki Recipe mein ek tikhi mirchi bhi to honi chaiye..."
Tia - Rahul's love interest. Bubbly, fun-loving still very kiddish, but at times shows a maturity way beyond her years. This maturity comes in handy for sure when the recipe of her love is at boiling point.
Pappu Bhaiyya - Tia's elder brother, a heart surgeon whose own heart goes out to an Italian girl called Roza but surely misses a beat whenever he is reminded of his father's Hindustaniyat.
Roza - Her love for Pappu Bhaiyya seems to her like a recipe gone wrong as all her attempts to prove to her father-in-law that she is as Indian as an Italian can ever strive to be seem to be losing steam.
Anthony - "oooo%%xxx **** & ^^^^: :: ;;;+++====" thats literally how his speech sounds and any effort to understand what he is saying is nothing short of hilarious. He remains the unexplained ingredient in this Love Recipe
Sunil - Tia's elder brother, a jilted lover who has donned the avatar of a maverick shayar and who eats, drinks and breathes Mirza Ghalib.
Pratap Singh - A retired I.G. of Police who has got bored of the British tradition he has been so used to and is now all for Bhartiya Sabhyata and Hindustani Tehzeeb which is taken so far as to become a conflict in his daughter's love story.
Kaushalya - Pratap Singh's wife constantly glued to the television and watches news as any other woman would watch a daily soap. It is her strange addiction to the idiot box that keeps one abreast of the latest news regarding the terrorists.
Music Ali - The singing terrorist who creates terror in peoples' hearts by his bombings and terror attacks but is himself immersed in old Hindi film melodies which he calmly croons as he announces his terror plans.
Carlos Randall - The head in question. Becomes the object of desire after it is accidentally severed in a freaky incident. It carries a reward of Rs. 50, 00, 000, 000/- . So virtually its his head that rules every heart in the film.
Govind Dhaimade - A sub inspector who dreams of catching Carlos Randall alive and winning the reward of fifty crores to impress his lady love. With all his antics and buffonery he can be perhaps rated as the 140th cyclostyle copy of superstar Rajnikanth.
Shilpa Venkatswamy Iyengar - A senior inspector and Govind Dhaimade's love interest and a die-hard Rajnikanth fan. Her hero worship has attained the strangest of heights. So much so that a picture of Rajnikanth adorns the wall of her cabin.
Shivanand Kher - Rahul's father who lives in New York but is perhaps more Hindustani than Pratap Singh whose Hindustaniyat according to Kher is nothing but a facade behind which even the likes of our netas hide. Kher is the one who gives the lovers in the film the catch phrase ;"Love aisi Recipe hai jo banne ke baad pakti hai"
DIRECTOR'S NOTE :
"Comedy is like a soft rubber ball which bounces off best when hit against the hard wall of reality." - Mel Brooks. - So true. I never had imagined that story which adheres to this thought will ever come my way. Well it did eventually in the form of 'LOVE RECIPE'. Here the hard wall of reality is the menace of terrorism that has become an evil in today's society. Try as you might there is no escaping it. The soft rubber ball is the severed head of the terrorist which is the prize catch for the characters in the film. The challenge was to set the film against this realistic backdrop of hate and make love win in the end while doing it all in a lighter vein. I think we as a team have managed to pull it off quite well. The film also rewrites some old adages as the hero DJ Rahul conveys his firm belief that being Indian is all about being so from the heart and not about creating a facade of Indianness. I love this film because it is seemingly meaningless yet wrought with meaning. It is mad, crazy, funny and I feel the recipe's just right.
