The film centers on a supposedly newly restoredpalace-hotel in Rajasthan aka THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, advertisedas India’s answer for the UK’s most elegant retirees – a place where they canspend their golden years surrounded by lush amenities – that is, until sevenretirees find themselves on the front steps of the not-quite-ready resort!!
The group is then enchanted by anIndia full of contrasts, at once intoxicating and frightening, traditional andmodern, beautiful and strange. At first, these seven newcomers seem unsure about what the future might hold. They areall at the mercy of the hotel’s ambitiously naive young owner, Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), who inherited the oncesophisticated building from his father hoping to turn it into a high end luxuryhotel. So far, he might only have chaosto offer, but what Sonny lacks in resources, he makes up for in enthusiasm.
However, as they begin to forgenew friendships, they make some unexpected discoveries and start to let go of the past. Theanswer for those at the Marigold Hotel seems tenuous, but India graduallychanges them and they discover that life and love can begin again.
An eliteensemble cast that includes Dev Patel,Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, BillNighy and Tom Wilkinson alongwith Indian actors Lillette Dubey andTena Desae can be seen zippingthrough the crowded streets of Jaipur on rickshaws and scooters discovering newaspects of life!!
Director John Madden was excitedfrom the start to pull together an ensemble cast who could bring each of these journeysalive in vivid and human ways. “In this story, definitions of age and maturity completely fallaway,” sums up Madden, “because the charactersare made young again by the situations they find themselves in.We tend to put oldpeople in a philosophical ghetto: think of how difficult they are. But in thisfilm we have all these old people behaving like teenagers. The characters aremade young again by the situations they find themselves in” says the talented director.
The film was shot in Jaipur, India over nine and ahalf weeks. India was a “learning experience” for Dame Judi Dench, who agrees with her character’s description of thecountry as “an assault on the senses.” This was the veteran actress’s firsttrip to India and we hear it left her with memories of a lifetime!! “Within 24 hours, I was completely fascinated andbewitched by India. The beauty of the people, I thought, was astounding. Thecolour, the noise, the smell. Everything about it is completely staggering. Ican’t wait to go back there,” says JudiDench.
Slumdog Millionaire actor DevPatel talks about his character the hotel manager Sonny, whom he describesas a bundle of energy! “Sonny is a Duracell battery; he's just gotcrazy energy. Everything goes wrong but he's so endearing because he has this forever-optimisticview of everything. He has this saying: ‘Everything will be alright in the end,and if it’s not alright, it's not yet the end'. He's the comedic relief. I'm slightly slap sticky in it. He's bouncingoff the walls. I wish I had a tranquilizer in some scenes.”
Showcasing a colorful Jaipur with an Indian cast and some of Hollywood’s most talentedfaces at their best, watch out as comedy drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotelreleases across all theaters on 18th May 2012!
