SAM SMITH IS THE FIRST MALE ARTIST IN 34 YEARS TO EARN NOMINATIONS IN ALL “BIG FOUR” GRAMMY CATEGORIES
Other major nominees include Iggy Azalea, Beck, Drake, Jay Z, Ryan Adams, Eminem & Taylor Swift with multiple nominations each Nominations for the 57th Annual Grammy awards were announced on Friday, December 5. With over half a century of celebrating incredible achievements in music, the Grammys are the biggest awards ceremony in the music community. This year saw a plethora of artists that are represented by leading music label, Universal Music Group emerge as major nominees across various categories in the recording industry’s most prestigious awards including Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, Iggy Azalea, Jay Z, Beck, etc...
British soulsterSam Smith, one of the biggest newcomers of 2014, was one of the top nominees of the night. He is the first male artist in 34 years – and the first U.K. male artist ever – to receive nominations in the “big four” Grammy categories following the release of a debut album. Smith’s ‘In the Lonely Hour’ was nominated for Album of the Year while his 4x multi-Platinum single “Stay With Me” was nominated for Record and Song of the Year. Smith also received a nomination for Best New Artist. In addition, he was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album (In The Lonely Hour) and Best Pop Solo Performance (“Stay With Me”), bringing his total nominations to six.
Some
of the most coveted awards of the Grammy’s see Universal Music artists
dominating the nominations list. Of the 5 spots in the Record of the Year
category 3 are held by Iggy Azalea, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift. Rapper Iggy
Azalea has landed four nominations; Best New Artist, Record
of the Year, Pop Duo/Group Performance for the hit song
“Fancy,” and one for Rap Album. The Australian rapper
has seen incredible exposure and mainstream success in the last year with her
singles -- specifically "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX garnering a
huge impact on the charts and radio.
Singer-songwriter
Beck garnered 4 nominations - Album of the Year, Best Rock
Album, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.
Artists Eric Church, Drake and Jay Z who are also represented by the Universal
Music Group banner have also emerged with 4 nominations each while Ryan Adams,
JhenéAiko, Rosanne Cash, Eminem and Rick Ross with 3 each.
While
Taylor Swift’s latest album `1989’ will not be eligible for
the Grammys this year her inescapably catchy song “Shake it Off’
still managed to get three Grammy Award nominations, including one of the
highest Honors...Record of The Year. She was also nominated for Song
of the Year, as well as Best Pop Solo Performance.
Universal’s Deadmau5 has also been nominated for 'Best
Dance/Electronica Album'.
