Gyan Mudra can be called a prime mudra in all the finger
mudras. Our body is made up of the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and
Space. The Gyan Mudra increases Vayu (Air) element in the body. In Hatha yoga, this mudra is used while
meditating. In Ayurveda, this mudra is known as Vayu-Vardhak mudra. In
Sanskrit, GYAN or JNANA means knowledge or wisdom and MUDRA means sign or
gesture. It is a mudra of knowledge, which is practiced to enhance one’s
knowledge and gain wisdom. Scientifically speaking, the tip of the thumb is a
centre of pituitary and endocrine glands. When we press the centre to the index
finger the two glands activate thus increasing perception. When you meditate
while performing this mudra, it opens your mind to knowledge and the vast
wisdom of the universe. It is this ‘Indian-ness’ that is most evident in
Aashish Singh Tyagi’s Gyan Mudra series. The colours he uses to adorn his
creations also portray the sheer diversity of the country with an explosion of
reds, yellows, greens and blues, a plethora of hues bringing the sculptures to
life.
The Gyan Mudra series is putting down all the amazing
stories that Aashish grew up on. The stories are from the Hindu mythology, He
says our scriptures are filled with enormous wisdom and it’s important that we
preserve them for our coming generation in these rapidly changing times. He
felt an urge to design and create in collaboration with these amazing
craftsmen’s something beautiful and meaningful, he adds the traditional Indian
art and craft is on the verge of extinction as most children don’t want to
pursue that work for lack of remuneration.
This series is an ode to these craftsmen and the fine
work that happens in India and thus in a small way conserves our crafts and
rich heritage.
