Sony Music brings together the Iconic Santoor player Rahul Sharma

Sony Music Entertainment, known to present musical innovations, today announced a first of its kind collaboration between India’s iconic Santoor player Rahul Sharma and the legendary Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest fame. The intriguing album titled ‘Deep India’ will bring alive a fusion between traditional Indian symphonies by Rahul Sharma and electronica by Deep Forest.
In celebration of the formal launch of its “one with nature” rainforest retreat Vivanta Madikeri Coorg and as a tribute to this exciting collaboration between Deep Forest and Rahul Sharma, Vivanta by Taj is presenting the “Deep India” concert at Vivanta MG Road Bangalore on the 13th December. That’s not all, as a part of the much awaited album, “Deep India” Deep Forest and Rahul Sharma have created a special track called Viva Madikeri for the launch of Vivanta by Taj at Madikeri Coorg, a visually stunning rainforest retreat. India’s pride, Santoor player Rahul Sharma travelled to the resort, recorded sounds of the forest that is spread over 180 acres and created a track that merges well with the surrounding.
The Deep India album consist of 8 brand new tracks that capture the rhythms of folk melodies from across the country and each track will be given a special ‘Deep Forest’ treatment. The tracks will draw inspiration from ethnic folk numbers that are rooted within the regions of Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, North East and South India among others.
Commenting on the collaboration Rahul Sharma said “I am very thrilled to work on this project by Sony Music and am confident that this unique fusion between Indian ethnic music with electronica will receive excellent response from music enthusiasts world over. Deep Forest has a great following and to work with Eric Mouquet was an enriching experience.”
The album is poised to be unique from Rahul Sharma’s previous collections, which are primarily instrumental based while Deep India will showcase some distinct vocal elements and will not have the Santoor played as the lead instrument for every track in the album.
Talking about his association and the album release, Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest added “I have always been enthused by India’s multi-cultural heritage, including its legacy of traditional folk music. In a bid to create a brand a new stimulating music genre I have combined India’s ethnic tunes with my electronica.”
He further adds, “Rahul Sharma is a young and talented Indian artist with exceptional Santoor playing abilities and with him the ‘Deep India’ project is poised at creating western music with a rustic twist. I also believe that the initiative taken by Sony Music India will be something that music enthusiasts will appreciate, globally”

Deep Forest is a legend in the world music space and we always wanted to create an album that fuses Indian folk music with world music. The only name that came to our minds was the talented Rahul Sharma and we are happy to be working with such stalwarts.”
Deep India is a venture under Deep Forest’s Projects, where Eric Mouquet experiments with different kinds of music from all over the world. Deep Forest released Deep Brazil (2008), which signified the aura and sensitivities of Brazil’s rainforests and local beats with vocal harmonies. The album ‘Deep Africa’ will mark the return to Mouquet's first musical influences, i.e. Africa and will combine atmospheric compositions with a spiritual and rhythmic mélange of African chanting.
